Sandwell has achieved a record-breaking 17 Green Flag Awards, announced on Tuesday 14 July. The council retained 16 existing flags and added Britannia Park in Rowley Regis to the list for the first time.
The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised standard for parks and green spaces run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, which is celebrating its 30th year. Britannia Park joins 2,390 other sites across the UK receiving the award this year.
What parks and spaces won awards
Sandwell's award-winning green spaces include Sandwell Valley, at least one park in each town, two cemeteries, a crematorium and three community-run sites. Of the 17 flags awarded, 14 are at council-run sites.
Britannia Park transformation
Britannia Park's success follows major improvements over recent years. The £2.7 million transformation was supported by funding from the government's Towns Fund programme, Sandwell Council, the Lawn Tennis Association, the England and Wales Cricket Board, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).
Improvements include a new sports changing rooms, a more accessible and improved car park, upgraded sports facilities, and new play and outdoor fitness equipment.
Council response
Sandwell Council Leader Councillor Ray Nock said the council recognises the important role parks and green spaces play in communities. He thanked staff, community organisations, volunteers and Friends' groups for maintaining the spaces to the highest standard.
The council said it will continue to invest in parks and green spaces across Sandwell to provide enjoyable, safe spaces for residents.
