Two more convenience stores in Cradley Heath have been ordered to close by Sandwell Council following the discovery of illicit tobacco products being sold from their premises.
International Vape and All Day have each been issued with three-month closure orders. The order for All Day was granted at Walsall Magistrates Court on Monday 27 July, while the order for International Vape was granted at Dudley Magistrates Court on Thursday 23 July.
These closures bring the total number of shops ordered to close in Cradley Heath to six since the start of July. The action follows an eight-month-long intelligence-led investigation undertaken in partnership with West Midlands Police.
Council enforcement action
Councillor Bob Jones, Sandwell Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement, said: "We're serious about tackling illegal activity on our high streets. Securing our fifth and sixth closure orders this month sends a clear message that Sandwell Council will not tolerate businesses that break the law."
He added that the council continues to work with West Midlands Police and partners to identify businesses breaking the law and take enforcement action.
Stronger powers sought
Sandwell Council has called for stronger powers for local authorities and supports Government proposals to extend the maximum duration of closure orders from three months to 12 months under the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
